Iosif Alexandrovich Brodsky (Joseph Brodsky) (1940-1996), a Russian poet, was born May 24, 1940 in Leningrad, USSR (St. Petersburg, Russia) to Jewish parents. He left school at the age of fifteen to study independently, teaching himself English and Polish. In 1964 he was arrested by Soviet authorities on charges of "social parasitism" and sentenced to five years of hard labor on a state farm near the Arctic Circle.
